There
is nothing more abstract than an illusion of three-dimensional
space on a flat canvas. There is no tree there, no house,
lakes or mountain peaks. It is all just layers and blotches
of paint.
For me, the means is the goal. I am searching for a
landscape that incorporates an innate possibility of
becoming a painting. In this lies an additional challenge.
Since we all intuitively are familiar with the laws
of nature, it is extremely limited what one can allow
oneself without shattering the illusion. My aim is to
create that painting which immediately would stand out
to me at any exhibition.
More than just depicting the objects themselves, I endeavour
to render the air - the space around them. For this
reason I work outdoors, right in my motif, as long as
possible. Days or weeks may pass before I know what
kind of weather is in a painting or what time of day
it represents, but when I arrive at that defining moment,
I usually simultaneously discover the solution to most
of my deliberations on technical aspects of that painting
as well.
Finally
I bring my painting into my studio to "tidy up"
and assure myself that I haven't been deluded or dazzled
by reality. In the studio it is the painting in its
own right that calls the shots.
While the dominating trend in today's art production
is to choose the medium best suited for the required
project, I am continually trying to develop my own ability
to master my own medium. To me, this is an integral
element of the ongoing project, and the most crucial
ingredient in "getting the message across".
